Venus and Izamal

Sun. February 8, 2009 11:06 pm

I had a date last night with a boy. He doesn't live here in
Mérida but in a town called Izamal which is 45 minutes away by car. The last bus that goes to his town leaves Mérida around 9pm. However, he has an aunt and uncle who live in the city, so sometimes he stays with them when he wants to do stuff at night. Saturday was one of those times. I met up with him after 6 and we walked around, unsure of what to do with each other. We went to the theatres to see what was going on, but there was only a German movie from the 20's which was bound to be strange. We went to the Olimpio and went to a lecture about astronomy and the universe. It was a clear night, with a full moon and Venus watching over us. I learned a little bit about the stars and it was very interesting. We looked at a nebula and Venus through telescopes, and it was a bit anti-climactic. They were just slightly larger dots. Ahh, Venus, la diosa del amor. No wonder I can't think straight when he's around. Venus' fault.

After that, we went to the Picasso exhibit next door. It was also anti-climactic. They were mostly drawings and little pieces of practice, I think. No paintings really. I've seen better Picasso at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Nueva York. Obvy.

Then we went to a cafe and had a café americano and a pastel con queso. We talked about our families and discovered that our mothers and sisters are similar. His sister's name is Reyna and mine is Renee. She cries at Telenovelas and Renee cries at The Hills (don't hate me Renee, you know it's true ;D ).

We went back to my house for a bit and I started showing off old FB photos of me from Pirates ("yo era un pirata muy sexy") and Hayride. I showed him the Bella Myspace and a video of "Hey Molly" from NJ Wizard's Ball. Ahh, showing off again. I need to stop doing that! But the thing is, I'm so proud of BalS and how far we've come this year. Both Emma and I learned so much about music and about ourselves in 2008. What a year for us! We wrocked in so many places, it's almost unbelievable. Sigh...I miss it greatly.

Anyway, that's all from Saturday. Overall, it was very nice. :)

Sunday was a blast. Me and three other girls from the program went to Izamal to see the sights there. No, my boy was not avaliable today. He had stuff with his family, ok? In any case, we had a few surprising adventures.

Izamal is a smallish town whose main pride and joy is the convent in the center of town. It was made back in the day by the Spanish from blocks from a nearby pyramid. The church and the surrounding buildings are painted a beautiful shade of mustard yellow. Contrasted with the blue blue sky, every picture was a postcard.

Pope John Paul II went there to see the statue of the Virgin of Izamal. Now, don't ask me what she was/is, because I couldn't tell you. I am confused about her nature. Her purpose is clear. She is a symbol of purity and goodness for the people of Izamal. But is it the statue or the symbol of her? I don't know because there was an entire room filled with the history about the statue. Some of her many beautiful dresses were there, along with many photographs from different times (she's like 500 years old, the stature anyway). But with all this hype from the exhibit, we did not see the actual statue!! Things like this always happen to me here. I mean, the confusion and not-so-sure-what-is-going-on-but-going-with-it-anyway. Siempre.

After that, we found a restaurant outside and I had some banging panuchos. I'm not even going to describe them. You must come here and eat some with me.

Then, we climbed the pyramid. I swear, there is a GIANT, ANCIENT pyramid just chillin in people's backyards. It is so out of place, but so perfect at the same time. It was a little unstable climbing up the "stairs", and the pyramid itself is not in great condition these days, but when we got to the top, we didn't want to come down. Yucatan is very very flat, and we could see for miles around. The wind was cooling us off and it was absolutely gorgeous. I want go there at night. I bet you the stars would be amazing. But I don't foresee myself being in Izamal at night for any reason...

When we were coming down, the strangest thing of all happened. I began to see a few giant flying insects. "What the shit, those are huge!" I thought. On our way down, we noticed that there were more...and more...oh my God there was an entire fucking cloud! It was funny because we were just talking about Planet Earth when we were surrounded by locusts. Qué extraño! It was absolutely amazing! I have never seen so many bugs at one time in my LIFE! We were in the Bible! I couldn't tell where they were going or where they started coming from. They landed on the tops of the trees and made them heavy and brown. All of the trees were brown at the top because of the locusts. I was too tempted. I picked up a rock, and after a few tries, finally hit a patch of leaves. Locusts exploded into the sky and I squealed and ran away laughing.

We successfully evaded the locusts on our way down the pyramid and successfully made our ways home.

I am having a wonderful wonderful time here. I wish I could explain how wonderful it all is. But I guess I only have the one word...

Wonder of wonders, Miracle of miracles,
-Ashley.
